Wilhelm von Gloeden was a German photographer, born in 1856 in Mecklenburg (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern nowadays). In 1876 he went to live in Italy, and settled in Taormina (Sicily), where he began working as a photographer.

An important part of his work is composed of Sicilian young men's pictures inspired in an idyllic Ancient Greece. Von Gloeben always shared with his models the profits obtained from the sale of their photographs. He is recognized as one of the leading masters in the art of Photography of all times.
